Jakob employs his analytic skills through data management and analysis across primary research projects and evaluations of educational programs and school initiatives. His work distills complex data into research-supported findings and actionable recommendations for our partners. For example, Jakob recently led a market analysis to measure the feasibility of developing a new school in an underserved community. His work helped the school’s leaders understand how to mitigate risks associated with moving into the area. Jakob is currently leading a mixed-methods study on the implementation of initiatives within MTSS frameworks across Grand Valley State University-authorized charter schools. This study will be among the first to investigate MTSS practices amongst a large group of charter schools and will provide the authorizing board with insights on how to better support its authorized schools.
Since starting his Basis tenure as an intern in 2019, Jakob has also interned at the U.S. Department of Education and worked as an undergraduate research assistant at Calvin University. As a graduate student at Michigan State University, Jakob taught a course on the policies and practices of educating diverse learners. He also presented his research on inclusive assessment at the National Association of School Psychologists and the National Council on Measurement in Education annual meetings. Jakob looks forward to teaching his toddler how to code… but she will have to learn the alphabet first.
