Sam designs research solutions to strengthen community improvement initiatives. His drive to build equitable communities and equip young people for bright futures shines through his work with early childhood and K-12 educators, mental health and social service agencies, and collective impact initiatives. He has collaborated with various organizations in the Grand Rapids education sector to develop a catalog of data and resources to assess their impact and is working to validate a series of kindergarten readiness measures aimed at improving early childhood education.
Sam’s motto is to live your best life. For him, this includes venturing to Michigan’s secluded campsites, world class fishing streams, quiet beaches, and ski slopes with family and friends. When the soil is not frozen, Sam spends weekends planting flowers, pulling weeds, and tending to the vegetable patch in his garden.
Before joining Basis, Sam worked as an independent consultant, conducted applied research and evaluation at Grand Valley State University’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy, and managed program evaluation and grant writing projects for a firm in Grand Rapids.
