Matthew Pepper

Matthew Pepper

Senior Researcher

Matthew’s research centers on program evaluation feedback with an emphasis on measures of teacher performance and compensation reform. He specializes in data management and governance and is implementing a large-scale research project on the impact of chess on student achievement in Missouri. He currently serves as the lead evaluator for a multi-year Teacher Incentive Fund grant in San Antonio and provides design and administration support for the statewide Tennessee Educator Survey.

Before joining Basis, Matthew served as the Director of Research at the Tennessee Department of Education, as a researcher for Metro-Nashville Public Schools, and as an independent consultant to clients in Tennessee, North Carolina, Michigan, and Arizona.

Outside of work, Matthew soaks up Minnesota winters by skating, sledding, and skiing with his wife and kids. These activities are best followed by his homemade buttermilk pancakes with warm syrup tapped from his backyard maple tree.
