Matthew Pepper

Matthew Pepper

Senior Researcher

Matthew’s research centers on program evaluation feedback with an emphasis on measures of teacher performance and compensation reform. He specializes in data management and governance and is also implementing a large-scale research project on the impact of chess on student achievement in Missouri. He currently serves as the lead evaluator for a multi-year Teacher Incentive Fund grant in San Antonio and provides design and administration support for the statewide Tennessee Educator Survey.

Outside of work, Matthew soaks up Minnesota winters by skating, sledding, and skiing with his wife and young children. He taps the maple tree in his backyard so he can serve fresh maple syrup with his homemade buckwheat pancakes.

Before joining Basis, Matthew served as the Director of Research at the Tennessee Department of Education, as a researcher for Metro-Nashville Public Schools, and as an independent consultant to clients in Tennessee, North Carolina, Michigan, and Arizona.
